Musings from the Manse
December 2011 - January 2012
I was watching Football Focus recently and was struck by the comment that football has evolved, surely it is still 11 men a side on a grass pitch! Well that is the case but look closer, the training regime is far more intense than in years gone by. There are far more back-room staff, it's no longer the manager and a coach or two. Players are checked out by a clubs own medical team, and diets training regimes are agreed depending on the players needs. Gone are the days of a fish and chip supper after a game, or so I'm led to understand!
Oh, and one other difference, as a youngster I had a club scarf and a woolly hat, both of which I seem to recall were knitted by my mum. Oh what a difference today, there seems to be no limit to what a fan can buy, club strip, (that's home and away), coats, and well almost anything goes.
Does this make for a better game, that may depend on who you support, but if clubs stuck to the same approach of yesteryear they will quickly be left behind. So overall, yes, the game is better. The aim of the game has not changed, supporters are still loyal, even if frustrated at times, but clubs have and continue to evolve.
As a church, whether GMC or the wider church, we too have to evolve, the central aim of the church is still set out in Matthew 28, the Great Commission, yet the church has to move with the times. If the church fails to meet the demands of life today then the Good News will be heard even less than it is now and as a church and as individuals we will have failed the clear instruction that Christ gave us.
