How do you know that you are getting old? Someone recently told me that a sign of getting old is when you can remember history in the making. In these last few weeks we have celebrated 50 years since the first man went into space. Colonel Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin became the first man to venture into the unknown when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on April 12, 1961. One of the quotes attributed to him was that he looked for God in outer space but never saw him!
In the same month that we celebrated Colonel Gagarin epic voyage, NASA made another significant discovery, they have recorded the song that stars and planets sing. Not for a moment am I going to pretend that I understand the science behind all they have done, but they have released the songs that the heavens sing. Admittedly it is not sweet music, more of a growling, slow rumble, but each star and planet recorded has a unique and distinctive song.
Perhaps the Psalmist knew something before the scientists when he recorded these words:
3 Sun and moon, and all of you bright stars, come and offer praise.
4 Highest heavens, and the water above the highest heavens, come and offer praise.
5 Let all things praise the name of the LORD, because they were created at his command.
Psalm 148:3-5 (CEV)
Perhaps Colonel Gagarin should not have been looking but listening!
