Have you ever left anything behind? You know, on the train, on the bus, bought the goods in the shop, paid for them and then walked out leaving the items behind. When Joan and I Hosted at Methodist Holiday Hotels, it was unbelievable the items that got left behind!! From umbrellas to clothing, from glasses to teeth!!
The other day I stood in a house with a friend, where the owner had sadly passed away and we were surrounded by a host of material possessions and I suddenly became very conscious of how mortal we are. As somebody once said – ‘Here today, gone tomorrow’
As we go through life, do we leave anything behind ? One thing that we leave are impressions. How folk see us in the way we are. We also leave influence. How often have you heard it said that this person or that person had a great influence on my life. But for me, the greatest gift that is left behind is memory.
The number of times I have said to folk in so many different pastoral situations, give thanks to God for memory. For I believe, that memories concerning all aspects of life, from families to holidays, from schooldays to work, from church and in the world sustain us in the good times and even in the bad times as we journey.
What will you leave behind? What will I?
