To the best of my knowledge it never took centre place on the sporting back pages; I never heard overly much about it on the news reports, but last week one of the most significant announcements of our land’s sporting history was made when Sir Stirling Moss announced his retirement from the world of motor racing.

Sir Stirling Moss, former F1 world champion, has retained his licence to participate in motor races. Every year since retiring from Formula 1 he has put on his racing overalls, and got into the cockpit of various racing cars, and pitted his wits and skills against others in the ‘master’s ‘ series of races.

This year after participating in the Le Man’s 24hours master race, he said he was retiring because “for the first time I scared myself”, and thought “at the age of 81 I don’t need to do this anymore”. This scaring of himself came whilst driving at speeds in access of 180mph!

Surprising the things that sometime scare us – the dark, things that go bump in the night, spiders, for me it’s .....well I don’t want to talk about it.

Being scared and fearful are not the same thing, we are scared of something for a moment, living in fear is perpetual. The Bible to my knowledge says not a lot about being scared, that is a human condition, but it does say that “perfect love casts out all fear”.
