Saturday 7th November 7.30pm
Life has been somewhat hectic recently with events conspiring to trip me up, but it’s probably my own fault either doing too much or not planning efficiently. So much so that when things did stop at home after the concert I realised that I had not asked anyone for a review of the concert for our magazine so I shall have to do it myself.
What an excellent evening we had at the beginning of the month? Now I know that male voice choirs are not everyone’s taste but the same can be said of ladies choirs. Both have their place and are just as entertaining as mixed choirs. What strikes me about the concerts we have at GMC is that they are given, by and large, by amateurs – ordinary people like you and me - doing their thing for pure pleasure. I have found myself, believe it or not, in front of a TV while the X Factor has been on. I hasten to add - not in my house! How people find this a preferable option to a live concert in equally warm surroundings beats me entirely.
To those of us who witnessed the chaps from Gillingham it was a brilliant evening full of variety from start to finish. Opera, Jazz, Religious, Ragtime, Oratorio, Showtime and even a football terrace song. We were also treated to solos from two young members of the choir on saxophone and flute. In their gold jackets and bow ties and with their high quality performance it was a truly great evening.
Having heard our organ played at the last concert it stuck me that we should hear it, as a solo instrument, more often. I asked David at that concert if he would be willing to play for us next time and play he did. I certainly enjoyed it and several others said that they too had welcomed these solos. David has agreed to play for us again next year and I’m looking in other directions as well.
We have a full programme for next year, details in the foyer, and thank you for your support at the concerts. This one raised £427 which makes the organising very worth while.
Linda rarely gets a mention for her efforts at concert time behind the counter in the corner and that is sad because I appreciate all that she does to make the interval enjoyable as I am sure you do. She is laid up at the moment so my thanks to Sue, Ray, Lynn and Angie for stepping in on this occasion.
