To eavesdrop on others peoples conversations might, and indeed should , be frowned upon socially, but, and I would not want to be quoted on this too often, can be great fun!
If I was ever asked to list my hobbies, I have to confess that ‘people watching’ would be amongst that list. If in an airport, shopping centre, or indeed anywhere that people have a tendency to gather, I can think of nothing better to do than watch the antics of others. It possibly comes from an over active imagination on my part, trying to work out what they are ‘really’ up to, without full knowledge of what is truly taking place. The imagination is often better than the reality!
So back to eavesdropping! Picking up on a fragment of a conversation can often be more interesting that the whole conversation, because you get to fill in the missing pieces. “We don’t do teenage birthdays here” was part of a conversation I heard recently, which posed to me the interesting questions why not? Is it that teenage years just don’t exist in this community, ‘we have discovered a way of cutting out those adolescent teenage years?’ Is it possibly that like some people who stop counting birthdays after the 40th, this is a community that has sought to live in childhood forever more!
I am grateful that God says that he knows not the part, nor does not need to imagine what He does not know, but that He knows me not only better than I know myself, “He knows how we are formed”
Ps 103 : 14, and indeed His knowledge is so good that He knows my needs before I can express them myself, “ the Spirit himself intercedes for us, with groans that words cannot express” (Rom 8:26)
If I enjoy watching and listening to people and filling in the missing blanks, how much more does God my Father enjoy watching me, because there are no blanks in my life as far as He is concerned.
